What is Free Legal Aid?

Free Legal Aid is whereby the State discharges the fees for representation for those who require representation in Criminal Law Proceedings, and who do not have the financial means to discharge the cost of a solicitor themselves. The Free Legal Aid Scheme covers almost all aspects of the Criminal Defence process: both attendance at the Garda Station and Court representation. The decision to grant Legal Aid will be based on your financial means: your income, assets; and also the type of offence you have been charged with. If you are in receipt of certain Social Welfare payments you will be entitled to Legal Aid.
